Early Evening (晩立)

かきくもる空もとどろになる神の物おそろしきこの夕かな

Clouds draw in across
The sky, echoing
With thunder –
How terrifying it is
This evening!

With silver dewfall
Does it compete
Yet, again, today
My fan I cannot
Lay aside!

Early autumn:
Still coolness
Has it none – but then
Lacking heat as well
Does the summer seem to continue on?

When autumn comes
Chill breezes
Are there of an evening, but
The every-continuing damp heat
Makes this world a trial…

Autumn is arrived, and
In these days the skies
Are cool,
Yet, the Waterless Month
Still sets the scene!

A single layer of
Cicada wing is my garb;
Autumn has come, but
Now, how many layers
Do I seem to have piled one atop the other?

Man’yō Botanical Gardens

There are 37 botanical gardens throughout Japan devoted to displaying the plants and poetry of the Man’yōshū, of which 27 are open to the public. In July 2016, I visited ten of these for research purposes, in various parts of Japan’s main island, Honshu, and one of its others, Shikoku. Read More about “Man’yō Botanical Gardens”…
