Sanekata Shū 343

While in the province of Michinoku, and had not heard a cuckoo call, I sent this to a lady around the Fifth Month.

みやこには聞きふりぬらむほとゝぎす關のこなたの身こそつらけれ

miyako ni Fa
kikiFurinuramu
Fototogisu
seki no konata no
mi koso turakere
In the capital, you
Must be accustomed to hearing
Cuckoos;
This side of the barrier,
Am I left, all forlorn.

I was unable to meet with a lady, with whom I had been conversing, for some time due to a hindrance, and hearing that she had said I was probably unwell:

あやなわが思ひわづらふこともなしあはぬばかりや苦しかるらむ

aya na waga
omoFi waduraFu
koto mo nasi
aFanu bakari ya
kurushikaruramu
Absurd, indeed! I
For suffering
Have no cause;
Not meeting you, is all
That would bring me pain…
