A poem composed by Hitomaro, Lord Kakinomoto, near the Uji River, when he was coming up from Ōmi.

もののふの八十宇治川の網代木にいさよふ波のゆくへ知らずも

monö nö pu nö
yaso udi kapa nö
azirökï ni
isayopu nami nö
yukupe sirazu mo
Eighty warriors,
On Uji river,
To the fish nets
Drifting waves:
Not knowing whither bound.
