Fujiwara no Ari’ie

Lord Fujiwara no Ari’ie, Junior Fourth Rank Upper Grade

従四位上藤原朝臣有家 (1155-1216)

The third son of Senior Assistant Governor General of Dazaifu (Kyushu) Fujiwara no Shige’ie 藤原重家, Ari’ie benefitted from powerful maternal connections (his mother was the daughter of Middle Councillor Fujiwara no Ienari 藤原家成) and reached the heights of Minister of the Treasury at Junior Third Rank. As a poet he was reputedly skilled in Chinese poetry, as well as Japanese. He was a member of the Rokujō school, but had close connections with the Teika’s Mikohidari school and, as a representative of the Rokujō school in the Poetry Office, was chosen as one of the compilers of the Shinkokinshū. A personal collection of his poems is known to have existed, but has not survived.
