Sanekata Shū 266

When I had gone to the Kiyomizu Temple, I wrote this in the Waterfall Hall.

たきみれどけぶりもたゝず水しあればいかなる熾に水つかるらむ

taki miredo
keburi mo tatazu
midu si areba
ika naru oki ni
midu tukaruramu
To strike a spark I’ve tried, yet
There’s not a wisp of smoke,
By dint of the waters;
What embers might lie
Beneath the spume?
