Sanekata Shū 83

When I had been secretly conversing with a certain party’s daughter at the Koichijō mansion, the lady’s mother got to hear of it and, being extraordinarily enraged, pinched her daughter most frightfully, or so I heard; around the evening of the third day of the Third Month, the personage from the Northern Hall told me to ‘eat the rice cakes’ and I composed:

三日の夜の餅も食はじわづらはし聞けばよどのはゝこつむなり

mika no yo no
motiwi mo kuFazi
waduraFasi
kikeba yodono ni
FaFa ko tumunari
Three nights of evening
Rice-cakes: I will not eat,
For, indeed, would I suffer,
I hear, in a bedroom where
A mother has pinched her child.
