When I had returned home, after a particular lady had vowed, for some reason or other, that I should never visit her again, after some time had passed, lo and behold, she wanted me to go see her again:

なにせむに命をかけて誓ひけむいかばやと思ふおりもありけり

nani semu ni
inoti wo kakete
tikaFikemu
ikaba ya to omoFu
ori mo arikeri
And for what,
Upon your life
Did you make that vow?
For you to live, and to see you more:
Such times there were once…
