KKS VII: 360

A poem composed for the four seasons screen behind the guest of honour when the Principal Handmaid celebrated the fortieth birthday of the Fujiwara Major Captain of the Right (Autumn):

住の江の松を秋風吹くからにこゑうちそふるおきつ白浪

suminoe no
matu wo aki kaze
Fuku kara ni
kowe utisoFuru
oki tu siranami
At Suminoe
The pines by autumn winds
Are blown, so
Their voices add to
The whitecaps, off the shore.

KKS VI: 338

Composed on the final day of the Twelfth Month, while waiting for someone who had gone somewhere.

わがまたぬ年はきぬれど冬草のかれにし人はおとづれもせず

wa ga matanu
tosi Fa kinuredo
Fuyu kusa no

otodure mo sezu
I do not await
The new year, yet it is here;
The Winter plants
Have withered and my distant friend
Has sent not a line.

KKS V: 305

Composed and presented to accompany a picture of a man halting his mount beneath a tree shedding autumn leaves before crossing a river, on a folding screen in the Teishi-In.

立ちとまり見てをわたらむもみぢばは雨とふるとも水はまさらじ

midu Fa masarazi
Pausing a moment
To gaze afore crossing;
Scarlet leaves as
Rain do fall, yet
Add nothing to the waters.

Maidenflowers:
Blowing through them comes
The Autumn wind;
My eyes do not see it-
The scent tells the tale.

A stag is calling;
The maidenflowers,
In your field
Are blossoming, don’t you know?
