SKKS XVIII: 1820

After Izumi Shikibu had been abandoned by Michisada, Akazome Emon heard that almost immediately Prince Atsumichi had begun to visit her, and sent her this:

うつろはでしばしゝのだのもりをみよかへりもぞするくずのうら風

utsurowade
shibashi shinoda no
mori o miyo
kaeri mo zo suru
kuzu no ura kaze
Turn not! And
For a while on Shinoda
Forest rest your gaze!
For it may return again:
The breeze ‘neath the arrowroot leaves.

In the spring of the year after Ōe no Masahira died, she composed this on seeing the blossoms.

kozo no Faru
tiri ni si Fana mo
sakinikeri
aFare wakare no
kakaramasikaba
Last year’s Spring’s
Fallen flowers
Are in bloom again;
Our painful parting,
If only it were so too…

When she had gone to the Hôrin [temple], the flowers in Saga Fields were blooming particularly prettily, so she composed this upon seeing them.

aki no no no
Fana miru Fodo no
kokoro wo ba
yuku to ya iFamu
tomaru to ya iFan
In the Autumn fields,
When I see the flowers,
My heart:
What should I say: that it’s content,
Or that they draw it from me?

GSIS VIII: 491

When Tachibana no Michisada went down to Michinoku, forgetting Izumi Shikibu, Akazome Emon composed this poem and sent it to her.

yuku Fito mo
tomaru mo ika ni
omoFuran
wakarete noti no
mata no wakare wo
He who goes and
You who stay, what
Do you feel, I wonder?
After parting
To part once more…

Sent to someone who was late returning after going somewhere he had heard the chrysanthemums were particularly splendid.

kiku ni dani
kokoro Fa uturu
Fana no iro wo
mi ni yuku Fito Fa
kaFeri si mo sezi
Just the word of chrysanthemums
Moves your heart-fading
Flowers’ hues
Folk go to see, yet
They make not such a homecoming
