極樂へまだわが心ゆきつかずひつじのあゆみしばしとゞまれ

gokuraku e
mada wa ga kokoro
yuki tsukazu
hitsuji no ayumi
shibashi todomare
To Paradise
My soul is not yet
Prepared to go–
My sheep’s steps
I would halt, if only for a while…

とくみのりきくのしらつゆよるはをきてつとめてきえんことをしぞおもふ

toku minori
kiku no shiratsuyu
yoru wa okite
tsutomete kien
koto o shi zo omou
The Law teaches that
White dewdrops on chrysanthemums (Listen)
Fall at night (Arise from slumber)
And vanish with the dawn (Go to prayer, all will die)–
That is what I feel.

ねがはくはしばしやみぢにやすらひてかゝげやせまし法のともし火

negawaku wa
shibashi yamiji ni
yasuraite
kakage ya semashi
nori no tomoshibi
I have but one request:
That from these tracks of darkness for a while
I might escape–
O, I would raise high
The lantern of the Law.

On the spirit of reminiscence.

もろ人のねがひをみつのはま風に心すゞしきしでのをとかな

moro hito no
negai o mitsu no
hama kaze ni
kokoro suzushiki
shide no oto kana
A multitude of folk
Have made their pleas–at Mitsu
The breeze across the beach
Soothes my heart,
With the sound of offerings rattling.

In the conception of reminiscence.

をしなべて日よしのかげはくもらぬになみだあやしき昨日けふかな

oshinabete
hiyoshi no kage wa
kumoranu ni
namida ayashiki
kino kyo kana
On every spot throughout the world
The sunlight falls
Without exception, yet
Tears, strangely,
Obscure my view at present.

In the conception of reminiscence.

わがたのむなゝのやしろのゆふだすきかけてもむつの道にかへすな

wa ga tanomu
nana no yashiro no
yudasuki
kakete mo mutsu no
michi ni kaesu na
I make my plea
To the Seven Shrines,
Garlanded with barken cords:
For a while to the sixfold
Path of sorrows let me not return.

をしほ山神のしるしを松の葉にちぎりしいろはかへる物かは

oshio yama
kami no shirushi o
matsu no ha ni
chigirishi iro wa
kaeru mono ka wa
Oshio Mountain,
The God’s blessing
Awaits; yet the pine needles’–
On which He made his vow–hue
Is not like to ever change…
