櫻花うつろふ春をあまたへて身さへふりぬる淺茅生の宿

Cherry blossoming and
Fading springs
So many have I spent, that
Even I have fallen into dotage,
At my dwelling, all overgrown with spiky cogon grass.

‘The cherry blossoms
Have already faded away,’
Simply that
Cannot contain my grief,
As one spring piles upon another.

Filled with fading flowers,
All across the mountain,
Still thick with spring snows are
The skies above my ancient home.

My garden has the spring breeze stained,
With not a dint upon it,
Should someone come calling,
He would swear snow had fallen.

Sanekata Shū 98

Around the Third month, I went hawking in Ōhara, and stopped on the way in a place where the cherry blossom was most beautiful; the following day I sent this to the Provisional Minor Captain.

Pheasants cried
In the Ôhara hills of
Cherry blossom;
Abandoning my hunt,
I, for a while, was captivated.
