MYS II: 107

A poem presented by Prince Ōtsu to the Elder Maiden of Ishikawa.

足日木乃 山之四付二 妹待跡 吾立所沾 山之四附二

あしひきの山のしづくに妹待つとわれ立ち濡れぬ山のしづくに

asipiki no
yama no siduku ni
imo matu to
ware tatinurenu
yama no siduku ni
On the leg-wearying
Mountain, among the droplets
I await my darling, so
Standing there, I’ll be drenched
By the mountain droplets!
A kuzushiji version of the poem's text.

When with many trials
The blossom have I come to see
Upon Kurabu Mountain
Already does the haze
Seem to rise to conceal them.

My darling, uneasily,
Does sleep;
On a night in springtime
Scattering blossom, alone,
In her dreams does she ever see…

[One of] Four poems composed by the Riverside Courtier on seeing the coffin of a lady in the pine groves of Himeshima in Wadō 4 [712].

妹もわれも清の河の川岸の妹が悔ゆべき心は持たじ

For my darling’s regretful
Heart, I failed to wait, alas…
