That when abed and
When awake I pray for
Our Lord’s reign
Do the ever-watchful

Can be raised anew:
For such a time are the Gods awaiting. |
Writing down my feelings.

Truly, is there still
Much to grieve on
In this world,
Having abandoned it,
For a nobody such as I… |
Thinking fondly of the past.

Simply on the
Once-seen past do
My fond thoughts dwell:
When did it turn to the present
World of tears, I wonder? |
On a journey as the days mount up.

Since I left the Capital
The days have piled one on another;
At this eastern
Haze-shrouded barrier
Blows the autumn wind. |

To my unsettled

The boats of Matsu’ura,
Though awaiting me there

A stag lies down,
In a reaped rice field, on a frost
Filled night,
Harder now than when guarding the crop
Is it to fall asleep. |
A house in the mountains.

Someone comes calling:
Your home is what kind of
Dwelling – they need not ask, for
Unknown to all
In the mountains’ heart it lies. |

Left behind
I am lost upon the paths:
At Waka Bay
The crane crying in the night,
Does he not think so, too… |
Rafting on a river of timber trees.

At the rapids poles
The raftsman;
Above him standing,
White waters breaking. |
