Upon Sao Mountain
The oaks’ autumn leaves
Must have scattered, for
Even at night behold!
The shining moonlight…

Were the eternal
Moon to cease to be, then
Sao Mountain’s
Autumn leaves for night’s
Brocade would I wish!

In the moonlight,
So clear, I see
Sao Mountain’s
Autumn leaves—to the wind
I would entrust them not!

Kinkai wakashū 295

Composed after I had had various people compose on the autumn oak leaves on Mount Sao in a shower.

さほやまのははそのもみぢちぢの色にうつろふ秋は時雨ふりにけり

saoyama no

Upon Mount Sao
The oaks’ autumn leaves are
A multitude of hues
Shifting in the autumn, for
The showers fall.

The autumn mountains
To Cathay scarlet

How many dippings with drizzle
Have fallen to dye them so?

SKKS VI: 574

From the Poetry Contest held by the Empress Dowager during the Reign of the Kanpyō Emperor.

神無月しぐれふるらしさほ山のまさきのかづら色まさり行く

saoyama no

In the Godless Month
Showers fall, it seems, for
On Sao Mountain
The evergreen arrowroot’s
Hues are fine, indeed.
