2nd Year of Tempyô-Shôhô [750], Third Month First Day, an evening in springtime: Two poems composed while gazing at the blossoms of the peach and damson trees in my garden.

A springtime garden
Glows scarlet
With peach blossom
And on the path, lit with colour
Appears a maiden.

The spring haze
Where does it rise?
Not in Yoshino,
On Yoshino mountain
The snow just keeps on falling.

KKS I: 1

Composed on a day when spring arrived in the old year.

年のうちに春は来にけりひととせをこぞとやいはむことしとやいはむ

Within the year
Spring has come again;
The one year:
What should I say: that it’s last year,
Or that it’s the year to come?
