Autumn 29

Left.

高砂の尾上の鹿の聲たてし風よりかはる月の影かな

takasago no
onoe no shika
no
koe tateshi
kaze yori kawaru
tsuki no kage kana
In Takasago
The stags
Have raised their call;
The wind bringing brighter
Moonlight.

Right (Win).

露さえて寢ぬ夜の月やつもる覧あらぬ淺茅の今朝の色哉

tsuyu saete
nenu yo no tsuki ya
tsumoruran
aranu asaji no
kesa no iro kana
So clear the dewfall
Did the moonlight this restless night
Drift upon it?
Lacking is the cogon grass
Its hue this morning…

Autumn 26

Left (Win).

天の原おもへばかはる色もなし秋こそ月の光なりけれ

ama no hara
omoeba kawaru
iro mo nashi
aki koso tsuki no
hikari narikeri
Upon the plain of heaven—
If you think upon it—extraordinary
Hues there are not one; yet
Autumn, unmistakeably, is
Lit by moonlight.

いかにせむさらでうき世はなぐさまずたのみし月も涙をちけり

ika ni semu
sarade ukiyo wa
nagusamazu
tanomishi tsuki mo
namida ochikeri
What should I do?
This cruel world
Is without all consolation;
Even the gentle moon
Brings tears to my eyes.

Autumn 25

Left (Win).

しのべとやしらぬ昔の秋をへておなじ形見に殘る月影

shinobe to ya
shiranu mukashi no
aki o hete
onaji katami ni
nokoru tsukikage
Does it tell me to remember
All the unknown, long gone
Autumns that have passed,
Leaving one memento:
This lingering touch of moonlight?

Right

秋をへて昔は遠き大空に我身ひとつのもとの月影

aki o hete
mukashi wa tôki
ōzora ni
wagami hitotsu no
moto
no tsukikage
Autumn follows autumn
Into the distant past;
From the heavens,
Recalling that I alone
Am as I ever was, moonlight shines.

Summer 21

Left (Tie).

いまはとて有明のかげの槇の戸にさすがにおしき六月の空

ima wa tote
ariake no kage no
maki no to ni
sasuga ni oshiki
minazuki no sora
As if to say, ‘Now’s the time!’
Moonlight, at dawn
Upon my yew-wood door
Does strike; how I regret
The waterless month’s late summer skies!

Right

飛鳥河ゆくせの浪にみそぎしてはやくぞ年の半過ぬる

asukagawa
yuku se no nami ni
misogishite
hayaku zo toshi no
nakaba suginuru
In Asuka River’s
Rapids’ waves
I cleanse myself;
How swiftly has the year’s
First half come and gone!
