舟とめて見れどもあかず松風に波よせかくる天橋立
fune tomete
miredomo akazu
matsukaze ni
nami yosekakuru
ama no hashidate
I stop my boat
Yet cannot gaze my fill!
The wind in the pines
Carried by the waves
At Ama-no-hashidate!
Yūshi naishin’nō ke no kii

ますらをが藻ふしつか鮒ふし漬けしかひやが下も氷りしにけり
masurao ga
mofushitsukabuna
fushizukeshi
kaiya ga shita mo
kōrishinikeri
Where brawny man
Finger carp
Did trap,
Even beneath the keeping-hut
Is thick with ice.
Fujiwara no Kinzane

雲かかるとをちのさとのかやりびは煙たつとも見えぬなりけり
kumo kakaru
tōchi no sato no
kayaribi wa
keburi tatsutomo
mienunarikeri
Draped with cloud
In far distant Tōchi
From the smudge pots
Smoke rises, yet
Indeed, I see it not!

夏の日も涼しかりけり松が崎これや氷室のわたりならん

kore ya himuro no
watari naruran
Even the summer days
Are cool in
Matsugasaki
For there is an ice-house
Hereabouts.

風寒みはだれ霜降る秋の夜は山下とよみ鹿ぞ鳴くなる

How chill the wind
Dusting frost
On this autumn night;
The foothills echoing with
The belling of the stags…
