Evergreen face
Never, shall autumn show,
Though he match the moon’s silver trees’
Thousand Ages.

This day to Miyagawa take me;

I’ll hang, and make my plea.

The moon upon the mountains’ edge.

Rarely, now, does His Majesty come;

Through the coat of autumn leaves the boat
Still leaves its wake.

Within the bay, rowing boats
Futilely
Past the rocky shore of fifty years,
Wetted with waves of tears.

All overgrown,
My estate at Fushimi I
Am unable to depart;
In ignorance of the sadness of the world
Have I come upon this day.

踏迷ふ山梨の花道たえて行さきふかきやへ白雲

Trudging, lost, amongst
The pear blossom on the hills,
The path comes to an end, and
My way lies deep between
The eight-fold clouds.

はし鷹のとかへる山路越えかねてつれなき色の限をぞ見る

The sparrow-hawks
Moult on mountain ways
I cannot cross:
The cruel constant colour of the pines is
All that lies within my sight.

君が世にあはずは何を玉の緒のながくとまではおしまれじ身を

My Lord’s reign:
‘Without it, why should,

Be lengthened more?’ Even for such a thought
Have I no regrets.

Will remain?

和歌の浦やなぎたる朝のみをつくし朽ちねかひなき名だに殘らで

At Waka Bay
In the calm of morning,
The channel buoys stand: exhausted
I crumble, not even my useless
Name remaining to me.

I cannot think on it more:
Here, in my evening,
Autumn days,
Mikasa Mountain is
Far away, indeed…

あらし吹月の主は我ひとり花こそ宿と人も尋ぬれ

ware hitori
hana koso yado to
hito mo tazunure
As the wild wind blows,
The master, gazing at the moon,
Is me, in solitude;
The blossoms and the dwelling, both,
Are what folk come to visit!

うきよりは住みよかりけりと計よ跡なき霜に杉たてる庭

uki yori wa
sumi yokarikeri
to bakari yo
ato naki shimo ni
sugi tateru niwa
The cruelties of the world
Make it the best place to live,
They say:
No footfalls mar the frost on
My garden, where the cedar stands.
