Coming-of-age ceremony

The Coming-of-Age (genbuku) Ceremony was carried out when a male child was about 12 years of age, and signalled his passage into adulthood. At the ceremony, his hair would be ceremonially cut and formed into an adult hairstyle and he would put on adult clothing for the first time. It might also be the occasion of his first marriage, if one had been arranged for him by his parents.
