Palace Lady Sakon

Sakon no myōbu 左近命婦, which I have translated here as ‘Palace Lady Sakon’was a middle-ranking functionary in the kōkyū 後宮, the part of the imperial palace housing the Empress and other consorts. The exact identity of this particular lady, however, remains unknown, although in his private collection Motosuke addresses poems to a lady he refers to variously as uchi no myōbu 内の命婦 ‘the inner palace lady’ and kosakon 小左近, ‘Kosakon’, who may have been the recipient of this poem, too.
