The fourth imperial poetry anthology, the Goshūiwakashū, the ‘Later Collection of Gleanings’, was commissioned from Fujiwara no Michitoshi (1047-1099) by Emperor Shirakawa (1053-1129; r. 1072-1086) in 1078 and completed in 1086. It contains the normal 20 Books and a preface written by Michitoshi. As a compiler, his tastes ran to the conservative, but his stated aim was to produce a collection representing the ‘new’ in waka, hence the anthology is dominated by women poets, with Izumi Shikibu, the greatest poet of her age, extensively represented.
