Other Collections

There were a wide range of different type of works in which the old Japanese inserted and collected poetry. These included diaries (nikki 日記), tales (monogatari 物語), zuihitsu 随筆 (a type of collection of short essays, anecdotes and other jottings), family and personal anthologies (shikashū 私家集), records of poetry competitions (uta’awase 歌合), poem sequences – the most common of which was the hundred poem sequence (hyakushu 百首). Examples from many of these are included on WakaPoetry.net.
