From the Poetry Contest in 1500 Rounds.

きえわびぬうつろふ人の秋のいろに身をこがらしのもりの白露

kiewabinu
utsurou hito no
aki no iro ni
mi o kogarashi no
mori no shiratsuyu
I am too grieved to die!
My fickle love showed me
She’d had enough with Autumn’s colours;
Now, I yearn for her as the bitter wind
Drenches the forest with silven dewfall.

わすれずはなれし袖もやこほるらんねぬよのとこのしものさむしろ

wasurezu wa
nareshi sode mo ya
koruran
nenu yo no toko no
shimo no samushiro
Had she not forgotten me,
Would my sleeves be so used
To freezing, I wonder?
In bed on a sleepless night,
Frost falling on my meagre mat.

としもへぬいのる契ははつせ山おのへのかねのよその夕ぐれ

toshi mo henu
inoru chigiri wa
hatsuse yama
onoe no kane no
yoso no yûgure
Years have gone by,
Praying that our bond should be, but
On Mount Hatsuse
The bell of Onoe
Tolls only distant dusk…

なびかじなあまのもしほびたきそめてけぶりはそらにくゆりわぶとも

She has not so much as waved to me, yet
The fisher-folk salt fires
Have begun to kindle and
The smoke into the skies
Has yet to rise…
