On the moon by the sea, for a poetry match held at the Poetry Office.

和歌のうらに月のでしほのさすままによるなくつるの声ぞかなしき

waka no ura ni
tsuki no deshio no
sasu mama ni
yoru naku tsuru no
koe zo kanashiki
Above the Bay of Waka
The moon emerges and upon Deshio
As it shines
At night the crying cranes’
Calls are sad, indeed.

Peaks have treetops

Calls stand for them.

On a moonlit night
On Tekura Mountain that
The cuckoo
Does conceal his call
Is not true at all…

Minbukyō yukihira uta’awase 1

The poetry competition held at the residence of Yukihira, the Minister of Popular Affairs: Left and Right prepared tableau, among other things. The tableau were in the form of rustic dwellings. Poems were composed on these in relation to cuckoo calls.

夏深き山里なれど時鳥声はしげくも聞えざりけり

Lies this mountain hut, yet

I cannot hear them!

Gone to ruin is
This house where treetops
Are tall, yet
