玉もかるゐでのしがらみ春かけて咲くや河せのやまぶきのはな

tamamo karu
ide no shigarami
haru kakete
saku ya kawase no
yamabuki no hana

Reaping gemweed
From the weirs at Ide—
Have they captured spring, that
Flowering on the river rapids are
Kerria blossom?

Composed on the conception of hawking.

かりくらしかたののましば折敷きてよどのかはせの月をみるかな

karikurashi
katano no mashiba
orishikite
yodo no kawase no
tsuki o miru kana

While hunting night has fallen, so
In Katano brushwood
I’ll break and spread around, then
In the Yodo’s rapids
I’ll gaze upon the moon!

Boats 船

水あさみ川せの波はたつものをくだすう舟のみつや何なる

kawase no nami wa
tatsu mono o
kudasu ubune no
mitsu ya ika naru

How shallow the waters in
The river rapids where waves
Arise –
What will become of the cormorant boats, sailing down
If they be full?

年ごとに鮎しはしれば沢田川鵜やつかつけて川瀬たづねむ

sawadagawa
u yatsu kazukete
kawase tazunemu

Every year
When the sweetfish run so swift,
At Sawada River
The cormorants do gather, and
Sport among the river rapids!
