In ignorance of the season
Trees buried in the valley
Do quite rot away;
Long ago, in springtime
How dear it was
Now
I cannot tell: just
Upon the unchanging moon’s
Light do I turn my gaze, yet
Drenched by the showers
Upon the beaches of my sleeves
The tides rise high;
In rain-gear
Filled with pity,
Folk to come calling
Like upon the breaking waves
The fishing boats
Have rowed far away
Into the common world, yet
Since, to you, my Lord, my feelings
Have I expressed:
All my many cares
Are forgotten ‘mongst the grasses,
Forgotten, I live;
At Sumi Bay
For a thousand years the pine trees’
Far
Distant treetops
Seem touched with glory
Everlasting
In which I may trust;
On Nagusa Beach
Did I find consolation
Long ago, at the shrine of Furu
That my
Colours lacked for brilliance
I had forgotten;
Beneath the scarlet autumn leaves
Does a trace yet linger?
Aged now, as the sacred grove of Oiso,
Yet you did ask me, but
Now, I have nothing,
All
Is seared by the frosts
And withered, but
I have gathered together
Brief daubings of my brush,
With no sense or skill –
I cannot conceal it –
And that this must be my name
O, I do regret it! A mandarin duck
Adrift in sorrow:
Is that to be my fate?

Meeting her
Is so rare, passion
Has begun to stain my thoughts:
I am ever, as
The firmament, cloud-covered,
Never clearing, like
The peak of Fuji
Eternally afire;
Though these are my feelings,
How hard it is to meet with her.
And for what
Should I resent her?
The boundless main
Offshore was the depth of
My thoughts of her;
Now,
How pointless
Does it seem,
As water flowing
Not once ceasing,
A binding cord,
My shattered thoughts, as
Falling snow
If they’re to melt away, then let them!
I feel, yet
Even were I in Paradise
Still would I find no peace –
That is the depth of love I feel.
Leg-wearying
Down the mountain water flows
Hidden ‘neath the trees,
The upwelling of my heart,
To whom
Should I relate it?
My passion should I show,
Then all, no doubt, would no of it;
In ink-dark
Night,
Alone,
So sad in
A surfeit of grief,
With nothing to be done
I’ll step out in the garden and
Stand there a while,
The white mulberry cloth
Of my sleeves
Dewdrop-covered
If they’re to melt away, then let them!
I feel, yet
Still grieved,
In a gentle haze of spring,
So distant my dear one
Just to meet her so, would be enough…

Spring is come, and
The plain before me blooms, and
Of the sight never will I have my fill;
Such flowers, for no recompense,
Should they be styled,
Their name given?

To a far, far,
Distant soul
I address myself:
I wonder, beside you
Flowering whitely,
What blooms are those?
