KYS IV: 284

Composed on the conception of snow as part of a hundred poem sequence.

いかにせむ末の松山なみこさば峯の初雪きえもこそすれ

ika ni semu
suwe no matuyama
nami kosaba
mine no Fatuyuki
kie mo koso sure
What am I to do?
If upon the pine-clad peak of Sué
The waves should break,
The first snows upon the peak
Would vanish clear away!

雲とづる松の枢に知らむ夜はひと声つくる鳥だにもなし

kumo tozuru
matsu no toboso ni
shiramu yo wa
hito koe tsukuru
tori dani mo nashi
Closed in with cloud
By my pinewood door
I know well this night
That to give a single chirp
There is not even one bird.

GSS I: 5

On the occasion of a Ne no bi celebration by His Majesty, Retired Emperor Suzaku (923-952; r. 930-946), being unwell and unable to attend, he sent Lord [Minamoto no] Nobumitsu (923-998) this poem.

松もなき若菜もつまず成ぬるを何時しか櫻はやも咲かなむ

matu mo naki
wakana mo tumazu
narinuru wo
itusika sakura
Faya mo sakanamu
Not a pine
Nor a young shoot have I plucked
That’s all that’s come of today;
How I wish the cherries
Would bloom more quickly!
