SKKS XVIII: 1764

In the conception of reminiscence, at the Poetry Office.

oshimu tomo
namida ni tsuki mo
kokoro kara
narenuru sode ni
aki o uramite
I do regret it, yet,
That the moon is in my tears are
From my heart;
Accustomed to it are my sleeves,
Despising autumn.

SKKS XVI: 1565

On fondness for the past, carried on the wind.

kuzu no ha ni
urami ni kaeru
yume no yo o
wasure gatami no
nobe no aki kaze
The arrowroot leaves
Show their undersides–in despite I return
To a dream–the world of lovers–
So difficult to forget–
In the breeze across the fields.

SKKS XIV: 1335

From the Minase 15 Love Poem Poetry Contest.

kayoikoshi
yado no michi shiba
karegare ni
atonaki shimo no
musuboretsutsu
He came and went
Along my dwelling’s paths-the greenery
Now withered-long since he was here;
Undinted, the frostfall
Covers all, while I go on loving him.

SKKS XIV: 1334

From the Minase 15 Love Poem Poetry Contest.

furinikeri
shigure wa sode ni
aki kakete
iishi bakari wo
matsu to seshi ma ni
Time has passed and fallen are
The showers on my sleeves;
‘ When autumn comes,’ he
Simply said,
While I’ve awaited all this time.

SKKS XIV: 1285

From the Poetry Contest in 1500 Rounds.

naraikoshi
ta ga itsuwari mo
mada shirade
matsu to seshi ma no
niwa no yomogyu
The way of the world-
Lies-no one had
Yet told me, and
While I have been waiting,
My garden’s become all overgrown.

SKKS XII: 1136

In the conception of ‘love in springtime’, from the Minase 15 Love Poem Poetry Competition.

omokage no
kasumeru tsuki zo
yadorikeru
haru ya mukashi no
sode no namida ni
His face
Upon the hazy moon
Has found lodging
This spring, as in those of old,
In the tears upon my sleeves.

SKKS XI: 1081

On ‘love among the clouds’, when she presented a fifty-poem sequence.

shitamoe ni
omoi kienan
keburi dani
ato naki kumo no
hate zo kanashiki
Burning beneath,
I shall die of love;
Even my smoke
Leaving no mark among the clouds:
A sad ending, indeed.

SKKS X: 932

A travel poem for a fifty poem sequence composed for the Monk-Prince Shukaku.

natsukari no
ashi no karine mo
aware nari
tamae no tsuki ni
akegata no sora
Reaped in summer are
The reeds for my brief night’s sleep:
’ Tis sad, indeed:
The moon at Tamae
In the dawning sky.

SKKS VIII: 787

After her mother’s death, composed on the evening of the funeral at Saga.

ima wa sa wa
uki yo no saga no
nobe o koso
tsuyu kiehateshi
ato to shinobame
Now it is just so:
In this fleeting world at Saga
Field, indeed, has
The dew vanished completely, and
All I can do is recall the traces left behind.
