Around the Third month, I went hawking in Ōhara, and stopped on the way in a place where the cherry blossom was most beautiful; the following day I sent this to the Provisional Minor Captain .

Pheasants cried
In the Ôhara hills of
Cherry blossom;
Abandoning my hunt,
I, for a while, was captivated.

O, for this peace and calm
Is my only wish;
Never to fall,
Our flowered Capital’s
Cherry blossom it is, I feel.
Late blooming blossom.

From the summer mountains
Comes the scent-laden wind;
A cicada wing of
Pale cherry blossom
Is in bloom today.

Beneath the trees
Should I come, for clouds
I would mistake them;
Why then, cherry blossom
Do they seem from afar?

Untethered is the
Spirit of spring;
A cherry-blossom cloud is
The undergrowth of sprouting hemp, from whence
Whinnies a colt.

Have the drifting blossoms
The cracks between the rapids’ rocks
Dammed, I wonder?
For in cherries’ hue emerge
The mountains stream in springtime.

The spring rain falls
From the breaks between the blossoms;
Soaking my sleeves
Among the unending cherries
On this path below the hills.

Am I alone
In springtime
I wonder, then
On the peaks the cherries’
Hue, indeed, is bitter.
On the conception of falling flowers.

Blossoms,
So, too, my feelings of regret,
Are unchanging.

Regrets;
This cherry blossom is late, indeed!
