How sad is
The faint tapping of
A water rail;
Awakening, old,
To the sky at dawn. |
下くゆるむかひの森の蚊遣火に思ひ燃えそひ行螢かな

mukai no mori no
kayaribi ni
omoi moe soi
yuku hotaru kana |
Smouldering beneath
Yonder forest,
The smudge pots
Draw the embers of my passion
Like floating fireflies. |
難波江やあまのたくなはたきはびて烟もしめる五月雨の比
naniwa e ya
ama no taku nawa
takiwabite
keburi mo shimeru
samidare no koro |
Is it in Naniwa Bay, that
The fisherfolk kindle fires of mulberry cord?
Hard to burn,
As the smoke shows
In this time of summer showers. |
さみだれに宮木も今やくだすらん眞木立つ峰にかゝるむら雲

maki tatu mine ni
kakaru muragumo |
With these summer showers,
Now through the royal timber grounds
Do the waters tumble, I wonder;
The evergreen covered peaks,
Wreathed with cloud. |
五月雨に池の汀やまさるらん蓮の浮葉を越る白波

ike no migiwa ya

hasu no ukiba o
koyuru shiranami |
With the summer showers
The edges of my pond
Look to overflow;
Over the floating lotus leaves,
Wavelets are breaking. |
今はとてそむき果ててし世中になにと語らふ山ほとゝぎす

yo no naka ni
nani to katarau
yama hototogisu |
Now
I have completely abandoned
The world of men,
Why does he yet sing,
The mountain cuckoo? |
あやめふくかやが軒端に風過ぎてしどろに落つる村雨の露
ayame fuku
kaya ga nokiba ni
kaze sugite
shidoro ni otsuru
murasame no tsuyu |
Sweet-flags thrust within
The thatched eaves’ edge, and
Below them blows the wind,
Dropping in disarray
The cloudburst’s dewdrops. |
暮かゝる山田の早苗雨過ぎてとりあへず鳴ほとゝぎすかな

Darkness falls upon
The mountain fields of seedling rice,
Rain swept, as
Too soon sings
A cuckoo. |
たをやめの袖うち佛ふむら雨に取るや早苗のこへもならばず

murasame ni
toru ya sanae no
koe mo narabazu |
Graceful girls,
Sleeves lashed by
A cloudburst,
Carry the rice-seedlings,
