SKKS IX: 888

Composed when he was going to a distant place and [Minamoto no] Moromitsu saw him off.

かへりこんほどをちぎらむとおもへどもおいぬる身こそさだめがたけれ

kaerikon
hodo o chigiramu to
omoedomo
oinuru mi koso
sadamegatakere
To return
Sometime, I would make a vow,
I feel, yet
For my aged bones
There is nothing certain.

The Monk Dōin

SKKS IX: 887

When he was leaving to go on a pilgrimage to a distant place, people were regretful that they should be parted, so he composed this.

さりともとなをあふことをたのむかなしでの山ぢをこえぬわかれは

saritomo to
nao au koto o
tanomu kana
shide no yamaji o
koenu wakare wa
I leave, but
We will meet again,
Of that you may be sure!
Upon the mountain paths of death
I will not set my step with this parting!

SKKS IX: 886

When he was leaving to go on a pilgrimage to a distant place, people were regretful that they should be parted, so he composed this.

たのめをかん君もこゝろやなぐさむとかへらん事はいつとなくとも

tanome okan
kimi mo kokoro ya
nagusamu to
kaeran koto wa
itsu to naku tomo
I promise; that
To your hearts may
Bring peace, but
My return,
I know not when ’twill be…

SKKS IX: 881

Composed on the spirit of parting.

かりそめのわかれとけふをおもへどもいさやまことのたびにもあるらん

karisome no
wakare to kyô o
omoedomo
isaya makoto no
tabi ni mo aruran
It is but a brief
Parting today,
Of that I’m sure, yet
Perhaps upon the one true
Journey I have set my steps.
