The sorrow of this parting
Is plain upon my sleeves
To see;
Parting us, your journey
Ends in dewfall.

かへりこんほどをちぎらむとおもへどもおいぬる身こそさだめがたけれ

kaerikon
hodo o chigiramu to
omoedomo
oinuru mi koso

To return
Sometime, I would make a vow,
I feel, yet
For my aged bones
There is nothing certain.

I leave, but
We will meet again,
Of that you may be sure!
Upon the mountain paths of death
I will not set my step with this parting!

To your hearts may
Bring peace, but

If you should go,
I’ll say I’m waiting for the moon,
Turning my gaze
Toward the eastern
Evening sky.

SKKS IX: 881

Composed on the spirit of parting.

かりそめのわかれとけふをおもへどもいさやまことのたびにもあるらん

karisome no
wakare to kyô o
omoedomo
isaya makoto no
tabi ni mo aruran
It is but a brief
Parting today,
Of that I’m sure, yet
Perhaps upon the one true
Journey I have set my steps.
