盗人の首領哥よむけふの月

nusubito no
shuryō uta yomu
kyô no tsuki

A bandit
Chieftain would compose poetry
Under this moon.

On returning geese.

歸る雁田ごとの月の曇る夜に

kaeru kari
tagoto no tsuki no
kumoru yo ni

The geese are on their way home
And the moon above Tagoto is
Hidden in the clouds tonight.

On winter: on meeting Ichinyū at a celebration held by Banzan.

冬庭や月もいとなるむしの吟

fuyu niwa ya
tsuki mo ito naru
mushi no gin

A garden in winter:
A thin thread of moon above
A single insect’s lonely cry.

In the first year of Eiji (1141) as the time of [Emperor Sutoku’s] abdication drew near, Toshinari sat up all night gazing at the moon.

わすれじよわするなとだにいひてまし雲井の月の心ありせば

wasureji yo
wasuru na to dani
iitemashi
kumoi no tsuki no
kokoro ariseba

Never shall I forget you! And
Never forget me–is all that

If the cloud-dwelling moon
