てる月も雲のよそにぞゆきめぐる花ぞこのよのひかりなりける

teru tsuki mo
kumo no yoso ni zo
yuki meguru
hana zo kono yo no
hikari narikeru
The shining moon
Beyond the clouds
Makes its way;
‘Tis blossom that to this world
Give light.

As my dwelling’s
I would see.

春をへてみゆきになるゝ花のかげふりゆく身をもあはれとや思

furiyuku mi o mo
aware to ya omou
Spring passes and
The royal visit’s here – a blizzard
Of blossom shading,
Falling – and me ageing –
Do you think of me kindly?

matsu no uwaba ni
awayuki zo furu
‘Spring has come,’ they say,
‘Look! It’s blossom!’
On the mountainside
Upon the pine-tops
A froth of snow is falling.
