SKKS III: 182

Composed when she was Kamo High Priestess, at the shrine buildings.

わすれめやあふひをくさにひきむすびかりねのゝべのつゆのあけぼの

wasureme ya
aoi o kusa ni
hikimusubi
karine no nobe no
tsuyu no akebono
Will I forget, I wonder,
Hollyhocks for my pillow
Plucked and twined,
Sleeping briefly in the fields
On this dew-drenched dawning.

風かよふねざめの袖の花のかにかほるまくらの春のよの夢

kaze kayou
nezame no sode no
hana no ka ni
kaoru makura no
haru no yo no yume
The questing wind
Brings wakefulness to my sleeves,
With the scent of blossom
My fragrant pillow is
A spring night’s dream.

SZS XVI: 964

Around the Second Month, on a night when the moon was particularly bright, a large number of people were gathered in the Nijō Palace, staying up all night and chatting about various things; Lady Suō lay down, saying quietly that she wished she had a pillow; hearing her, Major Councillor Tada’ie thrust his arm under the curtains, saying, “‘Use this for your pillow!’ So, she composed this:

春の夜の夢ばかりなる手枕にかひなく立たむ名こそをしけれ

Faru no yo no
yume bakari naru
tamakura ni
kaFinaku tatamu
na koso wosikere
A spring night’s
Dream, alone, is
Your pillowing arm;
Pointlessly to get
A name, would be regrettable, indeed!

しるといへば枕だにせでねし物をちりならぬなのそらにたつらむ

siru to iFeba
makura dani sede
nesi mono wo
tiri naranu na no
sora ni taturamu
They have ears, ’tis said, so
Even the pillow we put aside
When we slept together, yet
Not dust motes, but gossip
Rises to the skies.
