Composed on the spirit of Felicitation.

kimi ga yo wa
chi yo to mo sasaji
ama no to ya
izuru tsuki hi no
kagiri nakereba
My Lord’s reign will last
A thousand years, or more, I cannot say; as
From the doors of heaven
Emerge the sun and moon
Without end.

When she presented a hundred poem sequence.

ame no shita
megumu kusa ki no
me mo haru ni

miyo no suezue
Beneath the firmament
The budding plants
Put forth shoots in spring, and with eyes fixed on the distance,
Its bounds unknown to all,
This reign will continue on.

Composed in the Second year of Jōryaku (1079) at the Palace poetry competition, on the spirit of Felicitation.

kimi ga yo wa
hisashikarubeshi
watarai ya
isuzu no kawa no
nagare taesede
My Lord’s reign
Will last eternally, I’m sure; as
At Watarai
The Isuzu River
Flows on, unceasing.

SKKS VII: 722

In the Ninth Month [of the year] when Retired Emperor Go-Ichijō was born, on a night when the moon was shining without any hindrance, the Greater Nijō Regent [Fujiwara no Norimichi], then being a Captain, invited several young women of the house and boarded boats on the lake; while rowing around the ‘pines on Nakajima’, it was beautiful so:

くもりなくちとせにすめる水のおもにやどれる月のかげものどけし

kumorinaku
chi tose ni sumeru
mizu no omo ni
yadoreru tsuki no
kage mo nodokeshi
Without a trace of cloud,
For a thousand years upon the limpid
Water’s surface
The lodging moon
Light brings peace.

SKKS VII: 719

For a folding screen in the sixth year of Bunji, on the occasion of the entry of a senior consort to the palace.

yamabito no
oru sode niou
kiku no tsuyu
uchiharau ni mo
chi yo wa henubeshi
Hermits’
Trailing sleeves scented
With chrysanthemum dew
When waved
Pass through a thousand years, no doubt.
