GSIS XIII: 751

Composed and sent to the same place.

mitinoku no
wodae no Fasi ya
kore naramu
Fumi mi Fumazu
mikokoro madoFasu
In Michinoku
Is the bridge of Odae
Such as this?
Trodden then untrodden, letters and then non
It does twist my heart.

Master of the Left Capital Office, Michimasa

Sanekata Shū 279

At about the time I was made Governor of Michinoku, and was about to withdraw from court, as the pine torches were late in being lit, Middle Captain Michinobu (with Sanekata) said:

松まつほどぞ久しかりける

matu matu Fodo zo
Fisasikarikeru
Awaiting, our pining time
Has been long, indeed…

And Kodaigimi:

mitinoku ni
Fodo towokereba
takekuma no
For Michinoku
Is faraway as
The pine of Takekuma!

Sanekata Shū 185

When I had gone to the palace of the Former Empress to report that I was to leave for the provinces, Jijū the Handmaid said, while providing me with supplies for the journey:

みちのくにころものせきはたちぬれど

michinoku ni
koromo no seki Fa
tatinuredo
In Michinoku
The barrier of garments
Will you thread, yet

And I nimbly concluded:

またあふさかはたのもしきかな

mata aFusaka Fa
tanomosiki kana
Still, on Meeting Hill is
Where I would be.

SKKS XIV: 1332

From the Poetry Contest in 1500 Rounds.

tazune miru
tsuraki kokoro no
oku no umi
yoshioi no kata no
iukai mo nashi
Should I seek out love
Within her cold heart’s
Depths – as at the sea by Michinoku
In the tidal inlets
There are no shellfish – ’twould be pointless.

SKS VI: 173

After Michisada had abandoned her, and gone to be governor of Michinoku, she sent him this.

morotomo ni
tatamasi mono wo
mitinoku no
koromo no seki wo
yoso ni kiku kana
Together
Would we once have cut our way; but
Of Michinoku’s
Garment-the Barrier of Koromo
I hear from another.
