Sanekata Shū 77

Composed in the autumn, after the death of Middle Captain Michinobu, who had promised to accompany me to view the blossoms in the Eighth Month.

見むといひし人はゝかなく消えにしをひとりつゆけき秋のはなかな

Fito Fa Fakanaku

Fitori tuyukeki
aki no Fana kana
‘Let’s go!’ said
He: here fleetingly and
Gone;
Alone and dew-drenched is
A bloom in autumn.

Sanekata Shū 42

Composed when various people were playing a poem rhyming game in the courtiers’ hall, and I was given ‘footfalls’:

秋の野にしめゆふはぎの露しげみたづねぞわぶるさを鹿のあと

aki no no ni
sime yuFu Fagi no
tuyu sigemi
tadune zo waburu
sawosika no ato
In the autumn fields
The bush clover is garlanded with
Dew in such profusion, that
Arduous, indeed, it is to trace
A stag’s footfalls.
