桜咲く比良の山風吹くままに花になりゆく志賀の浦浪

sakura saku
Fira no yamakaze
Fuku mama ni
Fana ni nariyuku
siga no uranami
Cherries flower on
Hira Mountain while
Breezes blow
All turned to blossom are
The waves on Shiga’s shore.

いその神ふるの神すぎふりぬれどいろにはいでずつゆも時雨も

isonokami
furu no kami sugi
furinuredo
iro ni wa idezu
tsuyu mo shigure mo
In Isonokami
At Furu, the ancient, sacred cedar trees
Are old, yet
Their colours never change
With dew or shower fall…

みなかみやたえだえこほるいはまよりきよたき河にのこる白浪

minakami ya
taedae kōru
iwama yori
kiyotakigawa ni
nokoru shiranami
Is the torrent’s face
Only partly frozen?
For between the rocks
In the river Kiyotaki
Remain white waters.

さゝの葉はみ山もさやにうちそよぎこほれる霜を吹嵐かな

sasa no ha wa
miyama mo saya ni
uchisoyogi
koreru shimo o
fuku arashi kana
The bamboo grass leaves
On Miyama clearly
Rustle:
The frozen frost
Blown by the storm, perhaps?

ものおもはでかゝるつゆやは袖にをくながめてけりな秋のゆふぐれ

mono’omowade
kakaru tsuyu ya wa
sode ni oku
nagametekeri na
aki no yūgure
Not being sunk in gloomy thought
Why should such dew
Drop on my sleeves?
Perhaps, I’ve gazed too long upon the rain
In the autumn twilight.

ふかくさのつゆのよすがを契にてさとをばかれず秋はきにけり

Deep within the grasses of Fukakusa,
The dewfall links to
Your fate:
No parting from this house-
Autumn has come, I hear.

そらはなをかすみもやらず風さえて雪げにくもる春のよの月

sora wa nao
kasumi mo yarazu
kaze saete
yukige ni kumoru
haru no yo no tsuki
The skies are still
Untouched by haze;
The wind clearly brings
A sense of snow to cloud
The moon, this springtime night.
