取りすがる恋の奴に慕はれて立ち止まりぬる旅衣かな

Trailing after comes,
Love’s slave,
So sweet that I
Have halted
In my travelling garb!

Composed on the conception of the moon by the sea.

眺めやる心の果てぞなかりける明石の沖に澄める月影

kokoro no Fate zo
nakarikeru
akasi no oki ni
sumeru tsukikage

Gazing out
I find my heart’s last hope
Is not gone;
Above the offing at Akashi bright and
Clear is the moonlight.

高円の野路の篠原風冴えて玉井が袖に霰迸る

arare tabashiru

At Takamado,
In Shinohara in Noji,
Chill is the wind, and
Upon jewel-strewn sleeves
Tumble hailstones.

夏木立軒端にしげくなるままにかずそひまさる蝉の諸声

Clustered summer trees
Beneath my eaves grow thickly
And while they do

Do the cicadas chorus.

はるばると門司の関地を隔てすは文見てだにもなぐさめてまし

Farubaru to
mozi no sekiti wo
Fedatesu Fa
Fumi mite dani mo
nagusametemasi

Far distant
The barrier ground at Moji – your words
Stand between us
Though just gazing on your letters
Should bring me respite.
