Spring 14

Left (Tie).

ajirogi ni
sakura komaseba

e ya wa todomuru
Can stakes of fish traps,
Mixed with cherry petals,
Departing spring’s
Impeded waves
Bring to a halt, perhaps?

aware ika ni

kumo shiku tani ni

O, however much
The hazes and the blossoms
We have come to love,
To the cloud-strewn valleys
The warbler does return.

ki no ha chiru

On the leaves on the trees: thinking to see the autumn leaves on the cherry trees at the end of autumn, he went deep into Yoshino; on resting on his cane a moment, feet hurting in his straw sandals:

木の葉散桜は輕し檜木笠

ki no ha chiru
sakura wa karushi
hinoki gasa
All the leaves have fallen and
The cherries seem insubstantial
As my cypress umbrella.

SKKS VIII: 763

A certain person planted some cherry trees and then died in the Fourth Month of that year; on seeing them blooming for the first time the following year:

花見んとうへけん人もなきやどのさくらはこぞの春ぞさかまし

hana min to
ueken hito mo
naki yado no
sakura wa kozo no
haru zo sakamashi
To see the blossoms,
Planting, you
From home are gone;
Had the cherries come last
Spring, oh, how much better…

In Oaraki
Forest the undergrowth
Has grown so old
It does not tempt my mount,
Nor will any come to reap it.

Cherry hemp
Growing, the grass beneath it
Has grown so old
It does not tempt my mount,
Nor will any come to reap it.

SKKS III: 185

A summer poem, from when she presented a hundred poem sequence to retired Emperor Sutoku.

sakura asa no
ou no shitakusa
shigere tada
akade wakareshi
hana no na nareba
Cherry hemp
Growing, the grass beneath it
So lush! Simply
Never sating – as parting
Is in this blossom’s name….
