名取河いかにせむともまだしらずおもへば人を恨つるかな

Flooded by the river of loose tongues,
How we are to meet
I do not know;
Thinking on it, there is one
Worth the weight of my despite!

tsurenashi to dani

Having met and loved, now,
Afterwards, how my heart would be
I knew so well before,
That as one so cruel and heartless,
I am unable to despise you.

Will our love endure…

Dripping from the undergrowth
Drenches Moruyama,
Her countless scarlet
Sleeves, are what I would show you…

The pine trees’ roots
By stony shore bound waves
Are struck, and
Must stand revealed
Upon my sleeves.

The first, returning goose,
Borne before the gate of heaven, of the unseen wind
Is no harbinger;
Just so the fires of my love:
To whom should I reveal them?

The fisher-folk’s salt fires,
Fresh kindled
Smoke rises skywards,
Though passion smoulders here.

Deeply dyed the leaves
May pine, yet
‘Neath the drizzling clouds
Their hues are lost to sight.

Peak, the evergreens
Bow down before
The storm wind: clouds of
Snow around the mountain’s foot.

The streaming clouds
Are blown together with
The snow, shrouding the sky,
As zephyrs brush the peak-bound pines.

The dark of night is all unknown,
The moon on the distant mountains’ edge.

Upon the beach at Mitsu, wind,
Blow clean
The pines, for they seem unlike themselves,
Buried in drifted snow.

Shelter is there none,
At the ferry port of Sano,
This snow-shrouded evening.

In the ever-falling snow.

Asleep on my travels,
My path of dreams has ceased, at
The lonely barrier of Suma;
Returning from their roosts, plovers
Cries fill the dawn.

Come calling!

Starts me from night-time sleep…
