omoi’ide yo
ta ga kinuginu no
akatsuki mo
ware mata shinobu
tsuki zo miyuran
Remember,
While with a rustle of robes, you part from her
At dawn!
I still remember you,
Gazing at the selfsame moon…

Right.

hisakata no
tsuki zo kawarade
matarekeru
hito ni wa iishi
yama no ha no sora
‘The eternal
Moon, unchanging
Is awaited,’
I said once to him,
Sky clear above the mountains’ edge.

ajikinaku
tsuraki arashi no
koe mo ushi
nado yûgure ni
matsu naraiken
Dreary,
The heartless storm-wind’s
Roar is cruel, indeed;
Why, at eventide
To wait, have I become accustomed?

Right (Tie).

kaeru sa no
mono to ya hito no
nagamuran
matsu yo nagara no
ariake no tsuki
On his way home
Does he
Gaze upon it, I wonder?
While I wait the whole night through,
‘Til the moon meets daybreak…

ueshigeru
kakinegakure no
ozasawara
shirarenu koi wa
ukifushi mo nashi
The fertile fronds
Conceal the fence within
A field of bamboo grass:
Knowing not of my love, she
Feels not its cruel cut.

Right.

yonayona no
tsuki mo namida ni
kumoriniki
kage dani misenu
hito o kou tote
Each and every night
The moon with tears
Is clouded;
For one who’ll show not e’en a hint
Is all that I do love.

Winter 49

Left (Tie).

kamusabite
iwau mimuro no
toshi furite
nao yū kakuru
matsu no shirayuki
Upon the hallowed,
Celebrated shrine
Year piles on year;
Even now sacred cords hang,
Like snow upon the pines.

Right

nagameyaru
koromode samuku
furu yuki ni
yūyami shiranu
yama no ha no tsuki
Gazing into space
My sleeves grow chill
With fallen snow;
The dark of night is all unknown,
The moon on the distant mountains’ edge.

Autumn 38

Left.

nagatsuki no
tsuki no ariake no
shigure yue
asu no momiji no
iro mo urameshi
Late in autumn, when
The moon lingers in the sky at dawn,
From the drizzle,
In the morning scarlet leaves’
Hue is deepened—how I envy them!

75

Right (Win)

toki wakanu
nami sae iro ni
izumigawa
hahaso no mori ni
arashi fukurashi
The constant
Current: even it has broken out in hues anew;
By Izumi River
Through the oak forest has
The storm wind blown, no doubt!

Autumn 36

Left (Win).

shiguretsutsu
sode dani hosanu
aki no hi ni
sa koso mimuro no
yama wa somurame
Drizzling on and on, so
My sleeves are never dry
On this autumn day
Surely, the mount of Mimuro
Must be yet more deeply dyed.

71

Right

hisakata no
tsuki no katsura

shimo momiji
yado karu sode zo
iro ni ideyuku
On the eternal
Moon, beneath the silver trees
Scarlet leaves
Find brief lodging: my sleeves
Are marked with similar hues.

Autumn 32

Left (Win).

yamagatsu no
mi no tame ni utsu
koromo yue
aki no aware o
te ni makasuramu
The mountain folk
Full, for my sake,
These clothes, so
Is it that all of autumn’s sadness is
In their hands?

63

Right

kawa kaze ni
yo wataru tsuki no
samukereba
yaso ujibito mo
koromo utsunari
Carried on the river breeze
The sky-traversing moon
Is chill, so
All the folk of Uji
Full their clothes.

In Takasago
The stags
Have raised their call;
The wind bringing brighter
Moonlight.

Right (Win).

tsuyu saete
nenu yo no tsuki ya
tsumoruran
aranu asaji no
kesa no iro kana
So clear the dewfall
Did the moonlight this restless night
Drift upon it?
Lacking is the cogon grass
Its hue this morning…

Autumn 28

Left (Win).

akeba mata
aki no nakaba mo
suginubeshi
katabuku tsuki no

With the dawn, once more
Autumn’s midway point
Has passed;
Is it for the waning moon
Alone, that I feel regret?

Right

ikusato ka
tsuyu keki nobe ni
yado karishi

mochizuki no koma
From so many estates, and
In the dew-drenched fields
Resting on their way,
Speckled with the light
Come the colts of Mochizuki

Autumn 27

Left (Tie).

nagametsutsu
omoishi koto no

munashiki sora no
aki no yo no tsuki
While gazing skywards
All my thoughts
One after another
Have vanished vacantly within the vault of heaven,
Drawn by the moon this autumn night.

53

Right

mukashi dani
nao furusato no
aki no tuki

Long ago, ‘twas even so:
And now, upon this old estate
An autumn moon
Shines once more, as I know not
How many times before…
