The river Natori:
The days of spring have reached
Their span, and
Blossom swamps
The drowned tree upon the shoals.

It’s all in the name:
Storm winds from the peak
Scatter a snowstorm of blossom;
My mountain cherry door
Open upon a dawning sky.

My door of cedar wood
Within the eave-bourned blossoms’
Shade does stand, so
Bed and pillow both
Are perfect this spring dawning.

Blossoms’ hues —
Within the insubstantial water
Thrusts the pole —
Gleam in the droplets cast by
A ferryman at Uji.

櫻花うつろふ春をあまたへて身さへふりぬる淺茅生の宿

sakurabana
utsurou haru o
amata hete

Cherry blossoming and
Fading springs
So many have I spent, that
Even I have fallen into dotage,
At my dwelling, all overgrown with spiky cogon grass.

‘The cherry blossoms
Have already faded away,’
Simply that
Cannot contain my grief,
As one spring piles upon another.

When fair Yoshino is
Filled with fading flowers,
All across the mountain,
Still thick with spring snows are
The skies above my ancient home.

Cherry blossom hued
My garden has the spring breeze stained,
With not a dint upon it,
Should someone come calling,
He would swear snow had fallen.

The mount of Yoshino and
The sky above were as one:
Fragrant clouds of white.
