To be adorned

The original poem plays on the word tuma, which means both ‘spouse’ and ‘edge (of a roof}’.

Irises were hung from the eaves of houses once a year on the fifth day of the Fifth Month to ward of illness, so the poem says ‘Irises meet the edge (tuma) of the roof once a year, just as the Weaver Maid only meets her husband (tuma) once a year.’
