SCSS XIII: 788

From the Poetry Match held by the Hosshōji Lay Priest and Former Chancellor.

かつみれど猶ぞ恋しきわぎもこがゆつのつまぐしいかがささまし

katsu miredo
nao zo koishiki
wagimoko ga
yutsu no tsumagushi
ikaga sasamashi
At last did I see her, yet
All the more do I love
My darling girl, so
Should I turn her to a sacred slender comb
And wear her in my hair?

SCSS III: 192

A poem for a folding screen on the occasion of a Junior Consort’s entrance to the palace in Kangi 1.

風そよぐならのを川の夕ぐれはみそぎぞ夏のしるしなりける

kaze soyogu
nara no ogawa no
yūgure wa
misogi zo natsu no
shirushi narikeru
Whispers on the wind
Through the oaks at Nara stream
Of an evening:
Lustrations, alone, of summer
Are the sign.[i]

SCSS II: 82

Composed on a day during the reign of former Emperor Horikawa when the ladies of the court went to visit the blossom in the Eastern hills.

たちかへりまたやとはまし山かぜに花ちる里の人のこころを

tachikaeri
mata ya towamashi
yamakaze ni
hana chiru sato no
hito no kokoro o
Rising and returning
Only to once more pay a curious call:
The breeze from off the mountains
Scattering blossom round the estate
Where lies my lady’s heart…

Supernumerary Middle Counsellor Morotoki

SCSS XIII: 830

When the Gokyōgoku Regent ordered her to produce a hundred poem sequence.

雲となり雨となりても身にそはばむなしき空をかたみとやみん

kumo to nari
ame to narite mo
mi ni sowaba
munashiki sora o
katami to ya min
Even should you become a cloud, and
Then become raindrops
Falling on my flesh, then
Would the vacant skies
I see as a keepsake, perhaps?
