Mount Kazuragi

In modern Japan, Kazuragi or Kazuragiyama (葛城山) can be found straddling the border between Gose City (御所市) in the north-west of Nara Prefecture and Chihaya’akasaka-mura (千早赤阪村) in Minami Kawachi district (南河内郡) in the south-east of Osaka Prefecture. The mountain was a famous sacred spot in Shinto, with its deity, Hitokotonushi no kami (一言主神) able to bless or curse with a single word. In terms of its scenery, it was renowned for its cherry blossoms and white clouds, and besides wagimoko no had ao hata no (青旗の) ‘pale bannered’ and ao yagi no (青柳の) ‘pale willowed’ as makura kotoba.
