Haze-shrouded barrier

The expression kasumi no seki 霞の關 , which I’ve translated here as ‘haze-shrouded barrier’, was conventionally associated with the eastern province of Musashi 武蔵 and so reinforces the earlier azumanaru ‘eastern’. In poetry, however, the word kasumi ‘haze’ was associated with spring, so by referring to the autumn wind, aki kaze 秋風, blowing at the barrier, Kei’un evokes the length of time between spring and autumn thus adding to the earlier statement about the journey lasting many days.
