During the reign of Retired Emperor Horikawa (1079-1107; r.1086-1107), he commanded a hundred poem sequence, and Asasue composed this on the spirit of the beginning of spring.

うちなびき春はきにけり山河の岩閒の氷けふやとくらむ

Faru Fa kinkeri
yama kaFa no
iFama no koFori
keFu ya tokuramu
Trailing in,
Spring has come;
In the mountain streams
Between the rocks the ice
May melt today, I think.
