The wavering, early evening moon

The original refers to izayoi no tsuki (十六夜の月) which was specifically the moon on the sixteenth night of a lunar month. This was a moon that rose shortly after sunset and was felt to hesitate, half rising and half not. Obviously, the image is used here to reinforce that of the inconstant lover.
